Hope Talk – Art of the Japanese Fan

Among the most symbolic of Japanese art forms is the hand fan; strips of hinoki (Japanese cypress) connected by thread, covered with paper backing some of the most beautiful and elegant artwork.

The paper fan has a long history, originating from China as the rigid oval fan and developed by Japanese artisans to its modern, folding form.

Keita Yamamoto is the fourth-generation owner and craftsman of Matsuneya Fans in Tokyo’s Asakusa Bridge area. Joined by his colleagues and fellow artisans, Mr. Yamamoto will introduce the history and development of his art, as well as the broad variations of styles and uses.
